Investors digested the first major results of the profit-reporting season. In response to earnings results shares in Goldman Sachs rose by 2.3% and shares in Wells Fargo rose by 5.5% but shares in JP Morgan Chase fell by 1.9% despite the fact that the bank’s profit jumped by almost 400%. The Dow Jones index rose by 54 points or 0.2%. But the S&P 500 index fell 0.4% from record highs. And the Nasdaq index fell by 138 points or 1.0%.
