US sharemarkets rose on Wednesday with technology leading the gains. Shares in Facebook and Amazon hit record highs in the session. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index was up by 369 points or 1.5%. The S&P500 index was up by 1.7%.

Despite the decline, the Aussie market was down by as much as 1 percent this morning, so it has bounced off intraday lows.

US sharemarkets fell on Tuesday following reports that Moderna’s ( 10.4%) COVID 19 vaccine study didn’t produce enough critical data to assess its success. Home Depot shares fell 3% after missing quarterly profit estimates.

Local shares followed their northern hemisphere counterparts higher on Tuesday as hopes for a COVID-19 vaccine energised market optimists. Energy names led the gains after oil prices vaulted higher overnight, banks names joined the upswing, having been laggards in the recent recovery.

US sharemarkets soared on Monday. Drugmaker Moderna’s shares rallied by 20% after the company reported “positive” phase one results for a potential COVID-19 vaccine.

Sellers have pushed the sharemarket lower on Tuesday, in the process erasing the improvements of a day earlier. Property Trusts have led the declines, while Healthcare names have been the only sector to avoid the attention of sellers.

Investors balanced caution over new spikes in coronavirus infections against economic reopening efforts. Shares of tech giants Amazon, Apple, Netflix, Alphabet, and Microsoft lifted 1.1%-1.4%.

Gains have been broad based with every sector improving after the first few hours of trade. Leading the way has been the energy, industrials, property and financials. Consumer staples and communications have seen the smallest increases.

Shares of PayPal jumped by 14.0% after the company said it expects a strong recovery in payment volumes in the second quarter as social distancing drives more people to shop online.

Stocks that benefit from the ‘stay at home’ market rose with Amazon up 1.4%. Shares in General Motors rose 3.0% after first-quarter profit beat market forecasts.

The ASX 200 has snapped its two day winning streak this week with a decline of 22 points or 0.4%. Financials weighed heavily as the big four banks all fell. Improvements for technology and health stocks helped ease broader losses.

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals shares gained 6.0% after the company said its antibody virus cocktail may be available in the coming months. Tech giants Alphabet, Apple and Microsoft lifted 1.1-2.0%. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index rose by 133 points or 0.6%. The S&P500 index was up 0.9% and the Nasdaq index rose by 98 points or 1.1%.

The ASX 200 closed 87 points or 1.6% higher at 5407 as investors focus on positive news of the gradual reopening of the economy as the spread of COVID-19 appears to be slowing.

The S&P500 index fell by 2.8% and the Nasdaq index lost 285 points or 3.2%. Over the week the Dow Jones and S&P 500 indexes fell by 0.2% and the Nasdaq lost 0.3%.

Investors engaged in end month profit-taking and responded to earnings results. In response to earnings, shares in Facebook rose 5.4%, McDonalds lost 0.1% and American Airlines fell 4.9%. The Dow Jones index fell by 288 points or 1.2%. The S&P500 index fell by 0.9% and the Nasdaq index lost 25 points or 0.3%. The Dow and S&P 500 indexes posted the strongest monthly gains since January 1987. Over April the Dow rose 11.1%, S&P 500 rose 12.7% and Nasdaq rose 15.5%.

At the end of the day, gains were across the majority of the market with more defensively oriented stocks underperforming. Banks and energy stocks contributed most to the broader market moves. The big four banks all rallied by a minimum of 4.2%.

The Aussie market has had a volatile start to the session, with gains from the banks and resource stocks doing enough to push the ASX 200 up 1.12% to 5,372.4.

Banks pushed the market higher in early trade after Westpac announced $2.2bln in impairments without pursuing a capital raising, although by lunch the market had surrendered the early gains to be flat, after being up 52pts at session highs.

US sharemarkets rose on Monday as investors were buoyed by the possibility of a reopening of the economy after the virus outbreak. The S&P500 index also rose by 1.5% and the Nasdaq index rose by 95 points or 1.1%.

After a rather flat start, Aussie shares have advanced for a second successive session in what has been a solid start to the new week. The ASX 200 ended Monday’s session higher by 78 points or 1.5% to 5321. Today’s gain was the best in close a fortnight.

Banks weighed on the market in early trade after the NAB announced a $3.5 billion capital raising. Retailers were higher boosted by encouraging updates.

Ahead of earnings results, shares in Apple rose 2.9% and Microsoft gained 1.8%. But shares in Boeing lost 6.6% on reports of plans to cut production. The Dow Jones index rose by 260 points or 1.1%.
