It was a volatile session ahead of Friday’s options expiration. The Dow Jones index fell by 67 points or 0.2%. But the S&P 500 index rose by 0.1% and the Nasdaq index added 16 points or 0.1%.

The ASX 200 is flat at lunch, having been down by as much as 0.5% in early trade, as investors digest a flood of earnings.

The Dow Jones index lost 282 points or 0.8% from record highs. The S&P 500 index eased 0.7% from record highs. And the Nasdaq index lost 138 points or 0.9%.

The Dow Jones index rose by 110 points or 0.3% to record highs. The S&P 500 index also lifted 0.3% to record highs. But the Nasdaq index lost 29 points or 0.2%.

The Dow Jones index rose by 15 points or less than 0.1% to record highs. The S&P 500 index lifted 0.3% to record highs. And the Nasdaq index gained 51 points or 0.4%.

US data indicated US inflation growth may have peaked, while sectors tied to economic growth advanced on the heels of the passage of a large US$1 trillion infrastructure bill.

Energy rose 3.5% with airlines up 3.3% and the Hotels, restaurants and leisure index rose 2.9%. Shares in United Airlines rose by 3.8% in response to a lift in travel demand.

The Dow Jones index lifted by 550 points or 1.6% after falling 726 points on Monday. The S&P 500 index rose by 1.5%. And the Nasdaq gained 224 points or 1.6%.

The Dow Jones index fell by 726 points or 2.1% after being down 946 points. The S&P 500 index fell by 1.6%. And the Nasdaq lost 152 points or 1.1%.

Technology shares fell while defensive real estate and utilities sectors rose. Shares in Amazon fell by 1.6% and shares in Nvidia fell 4.3%.

Investors digested economic data as well as testimony by the Fed chair. Shares in Bank of America fell 2.5% in response to latest earnings. The Dow Jones index rose by 44 points or 0.1%.

Investors debated the implications of higher-than-expected inflation. But investor sentiment was supported by bumper earnings from Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase.

Investors await the start of earnings season. Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan Chase report on Tuesday while inflation data is also released the same day. Financials rose 1.0% and real estate rose 0.9%.

Investors regained some confidence in the global growth outlook. Bank of America (+3.3%), Goldman Sachs (+3.6%) and JPMorgan (+3.2%) led a bounce in financial shares ahead of June quarter earnings results.

The Dow Jones index fell by 260 points or 0.8% after falling as much as 536 points in the session. The S&P 500 index lost 0.9%. And the Nasdaq index dropped 105 points or 0.7%.

The Dow Jones index rose by 104 points or 0.3%. The S&P 500 index also added 0.3% and the Nasdaq index was up by 1 point or less than 0.1% -both closing at record highs.

The Dow Jones index fell by 209 points or 0.6%. The S&P 500 index lost 0.2%, ending a streak of seven consecutive closing record highs. But the Nasdaq index was up by 24 points or 0.2%.

European sharemarkets advanced on Monday. The pan-European STOXX 600 index lifted by 0.3%. Banks (+1.7%), materials (+1.5%) and travel (+1.2%) shares led gains.

The Dow Jones index rose by 153 points or 0.4%. The S&P 500 index climbed 0.8% and the Nasdaq index was up by 117 points or 0.8%. All three indices closed at record highs.

Data generally encouraged investors with jobless claims falling to the lowest level since the pandemic-led lockdowns. But the prices paid component of the ISM survey was the highest since records began in 1979.

Shares in Boeing rose 1.6% after Germany’s defence ministry announced it would buy five of the plane-maker’s P-8A maritime control aircraft. Economic data was supportive for stocks. The Dow Jones index rose by 210 points or 0.6%.

US President Biden has embraced a $1.2 trillion bipartisan Senate deal on infrastructure spending.

The Dow Jones index fell by 71 points or 0.2%. The S&P 500 index lost 0.1%. But the Nasdaq index rose by 18.5 points or 0.1% to a record high.

Technology shares were out-performing on optimism for a quicker-than-expected economic recovery. At Wednesday’s Federal Reserve meeting more policymakers brought forward their expectations on the timing of rate hikes.
