Investors digested the latest Federal Reserve rate decision and forecasts. Energy and healthcare stocks fell while financials, retail and consumer discretionary sectors rose. The Dow Jones index fell by 266 points or 0.8%.

The Dow Jones index closed down by 94 points or 0.3%. The S&P 500 index lost 0.2% after briefly hitting a record intraday high. And the Nasdaq index was lower by 101 points or 0.7%.

At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index was up by 19 points or 0.1%. The S&P 500 index climbed by 0.5% to a record closing high. And the Nasdaq index was higher by 108.5 points or 0.8%.

At the close of trade, the Dow was lower by 153 points or 0.4%. The S&P 500 index fell by 0.2%. And the Nasdaq index was lower by 13 points or 0.1%.

Strong economic data prompted concerns that the US Federal Reserve may withdraw its stimulus earlier-than-expected.

The Dow Jones index rose by 25 points or 0.1%. The S&P 500 index also rose by 0.1%. And the Nasdaq index rose by 20 points or 0.1%.

Comments from US Federal Reserve officials helped damp down concerns about runaway inflation and kept bond yields in check.

The Dow Jones index fell by 81.5 points or 0.2%. The S&P 500 index also slid 0.2% and the Nasdaq index lost 4 points or less than 0.1%.

Boeing rose 3.1% – supporting the Dow Jones index – on plans to lift production. Shares in Ford Motor rose 6.7% on plans to form a battery joint venture. The Dow rose by 124 points or 0.4%. But the S&P 500 index lost 0.1%.

There were gains in technology megacaps Apple (+2.1%), Microsoft (+1.4%) and Tesla (+4.1%) powering the advance. Shares of Ford rose 3.1% on plans to create a joint venture to manufacture electric vehicle batteries.

Investors digested the minutes from the April 28 Federal Reserve meeting. Energy and materials sectors led the declines. But shares in Target rose 6.1% after first quarter sales topped Wall Street estimates.

Shares in Walmart rose 2.2% after raising its full-year earnings forecast. Shares in Home Depot fell 1.0% despite posting same-store sales above estimates. A fall in housing starts weighed on home builders.

Investors weighed risks to the economic outlook posed by inflation and a spike in Covid-19 cases in parts of Asia.

US sharemarkets were led higher by technology shares. Facebook (+3.5%), Tesla (+3.2%), Alphabet (+2.2%) and Microsoft (+2.1%) shares all lifted.

The Dow Jones index rose by 434 points or 1.3%. The S&P 500 index gained 1.2% and the Nasdaq index climbed 93 points or 0.7%.

There was a decline in technology shares as key inflation data showed higher-than-expected US consumer price pressures.

US sharemarkets fell again on Tuesday. Rising commodity prices and fears of labour shortages drove expectations of higher inflation, and therefore higher interest rates.

US sharemarkets ended weaker on Monday as Investors continue to shift into cyclicals – stocks that benefit from the re-opening of the economy – while tech stocks fell.

The Dow Jones index rose by 229 points or 0.7% and the S&P 500 index also added 0.7% – both closing at record highs. And the Nasdaq index lifted 119 points or 0.9%.

PayPal shares lifted 1.9% after the company posted better-than-expected earnings. Costco shares jumped 2.8% after the retailer said that its April sales surged 33.5%.

The Dow Jones index rose by 20 points or 0.1%. But the S&P 500 index lost 0.7% and the Nasdaq index dropped 262 points or 1.9%.

The Dow Jones index rose by 3 points or less than 0.1%. The S&P 500 index fell by just 0.9 points from record highs. And the Nasdaq index fell by 48.5 points or 0.3% from record highs.

Key earnings reports are set to be delivered this week. Investors also await the Federal Reserve rates decision and data on economic growth. Shares in Tesla rose by 1.2% ahead of results expected after the bell on Monday.

The Dow Jones index closed up by 228 points or 0.7%. The S&P 500 index gained 1.1% and the Nasdaq index added 198 points or 1.4%. For the week, the Dow Jones index fell 0.5%, the S&P 500 index lost 0.1% and the Nasdaq index dipped 0.3%.

There was mixed economic data and renewed concern the pandemic was worsening. Investor sentiment was also dampened after Reuters reported that US President Joe Biden will propose raising the marginal income tax rate to 39.6% from 37%.

Nine of the 11 S&P 500 sectors rose, with only communication services and utilities falling. Shares in Netflix fell by 7.4% after it disappointed with data on subscriber growth in the first quarter.

The Dow Jones index fell by 256 points or 0.8%. The S&P 500 index fell by 0.7%. And the Nasdaq index lost 128.5 points or 0.9%. After the close of trade, shares in Netflix were down by 10% in response to its earnings result.

Thursday saw the Dow Jones index topping 34,000 points for the first time ever. Falling bond yields sparked buying of technology stocks with shares of Netflix (+1.7%), Facebook (+1.7%), Alphabet (+1.9%) and Apple (+1.9%) all up.

The Dow Jones index rose by 54 points or 0.2%. But the S&P 500 index fell 0.4% from record highs. And the Nasdaq index fell by 138 points or 1.0%.

The Dow Jones index closed down by 68 points or 0.2%, but the S&P 500 index rose by 0.3% to a record closing high. And the Nasdaq index added 146 points or 1.1%.
